Efficient Manufacture by 6-Axis Control Machining with the Application of Ultrasonic Vibrations

This paper introduces a new machining technology which utilizes 6-axis control machine tool, CAD/CAM system and the ultrasonic vibration tool. Complex shape groove with sharp corner are difficult or impossible to manufacture by conventional manner or even by NC machining in one setup. It requires two or more setups as well as expensive fixture to machine such complex shape. In the study, complex shape groove with sharp corner are manufactured by 6-axis control machining using non-rotational cutting tool with the application of ultrasonic vibrations. It also described the development of software for 6-axis control machining of complex shape groove with sharp corner. From the experimental results, it was found out that the new machining technology is capable of manufacturing a complex shape groove in one setup.
