The study deals with the development of an ultraprecison machining center, capable of 1 nm positioning, based on the concept of friction-free servo mechanism and with its application to manufacture of precise Fresnel lens. The combination of friction-free servo mechanism for feeding and rotation allows an ultraprecision machining center with control degrees of freedom up to 6 axis. The machining center can work not only as a conventional turning lathe but also a milling machine together with specially designed diamond tools attached to a high-speed spindle unit. The ultraprecision machining center with a rotational single crystal diamond cutting edge enables the manufacture of Fresnel lens of 50 mm in diameter with the surface roughness of 10 nm. As aresult, it is foud that the ultraprecision machining center has the potential of producing accurate optical devices without any burr.
